Mortuary attendants at Bibiani Government Hospital in the Western North Region are appealing for immediate assistance from the government and other stakeholders to address critical power supply issues affecting their operations.
Mr. Nyamekye Joseph, popularly known as "Last Doctor," who heads the mortuary attendants, highlighted the pressing need for improved power supply to the hospital's morgue. He emphasized that frequent power outages are severely disrupting their services and causing significant challenges in managing the influx of deceased individuals, particularly those brought in by law enforcement agencies.
Speaking to the press, Mr. Nyamekye Joseph expressed concern over the mounting number of bodies received daily, stressing that the existing power infrastructure is inadequate to handle the workload. He appealed for urgent support, urging the government to provide a high-voltage power plant to augment the morgue's capacity.
"The current power supply is insufficient for our needs, especially with the increasing number of bodies, particularly those from the police. We are unable to refuse these cases due to our role as a government facility," stated Mr. Nyamekye Joseph.
He further warned of potential health hazards if the power issues persist, citing cases of bodies starting to decay due to inadequate refrigeration. "Some bodies are already decomposing due to low power supply. We urgently need a reliable power solution to prevent further deterioration of bodies," he explained.
Mr. Nyamekye Joseph called on non-governmental organizations (NGOs), philanthropists, and local stakeholders to join efforts in securing the necessary resources to upgrade the morgue's power supply. He emphasized that immediate action is required to avert further challenges and ensure proper handling of deceased individuals in the region.
The plea from Bibiani Government Hospital's mortuary attendants underscores the critical importance of reliable infrastructure to support essential healthcare services and highlights the need for swift intervention to safeguard public health and dignity in the management of deceased i
ndividuals.
